Everyone likes to think of their favorite natural mineral as ‘refined’. You may have even thought about loving unrefined sea salts. What you might not know is that many salts received from different areas of the world have minerals in them that are not found in seawater. These types of salts are called unrefined sea salts. Many of these salts have an amazing array of different minerals in them that range from white to yellow. If you love salty foods and enjoy the flavor of sea salt, then unrefined sea salts are something that you should try to enjoy as often as possible.
Some things to look for when trying to choose a salt: color. Unrefined salts can be found in a wide range of colors including light silver, light gold, and even deep shades of purple. Low magnesium and potassium content. Unlike other mineral contents, unrefined sea salts are missing several important trace minerals. These include calcium, magnesium, and potassium. As a result, they have very low mineral content and are not as effective for increasing the overall value or taste of foods. This is why they are often added to sauces and canards as a way to add additional flavor without overpowering the original flavor of the food.
No nutritive value. While refined and processed table salt are definitely fine for everyday consumption, unrefined sea salts lack the nutrients and trace elements that are necessary for good health. In addition, unrefined salts do not offer any of the many health benefits associated with other types of salt. The trace minerals that are found in salt can help you maintain a healthy blood-clotting mechanism, boost your immunity, and provide you with a few other positive benefits. However, they do not offer you any of the heart-health benefits associated with sodium chloride, which makes using them as a sport drink pretty much a waste of money. Even though they do contain sodium chloride, the health benefits that come with sodium chloride are generally overshadowed by the negative side effects associated with it.
Unrefined salt harvesting involves harvesting the mineral content from seawater in order to extract the minerals that are naturally present. Fortunately, you can purchase salt harvested from other areas at a lower price than those harvested in the ocean.
